About FirstClass Synchronization Services
Through FirstClass Synchronization Services (FCSS), you can make your FirstClass based information, such as calendar events, contacts, and tasks, available on your remote devices and applications that support this kind of information. These devices may include mobile phones, smartphones, personal digital assistants, and standards based email clients. Synchronization takes place over either wired or wireless data networks.
SyncML, an industry standard protocol supported by a wide variety of handheld devices and desktop applications, enables the synchronization process. FCSS provides a SyncML interface for a FirstClass system. It is a server based extension that must be installed on your FirstClass system by your administrator.
How FirstClass Synchronization Services works
Your SyncML enabled device or application communicates with FCSS by sending SyncML commands through a standard HTTP data connection over a wired or wireless data network. To confirm that your device has the required data connectivity, ask your system administrator or your wireless service provider.
There are many varieties of SyncML enabled devices and applications available. Almost all have a setup or profile area that provides a way to configure a number of fields and options. The key fields that you need to configure in the SyncML device/application are:
• the address or URL of your FirstClass synchronization server
This is the name or IP address of the FirstClass Internet Services server running Synchronization Services. Your system administrator can provide you with this information. The SyncML device needs this information to locate the right SyncML server.
• your FirstClass user ID and your password
This information is required to enable FCSS to provide a secure way to control who can access your account data.
• the names of the databases or folders that you wish to synchronize.
The standard choices available with FirstClass are calendar for calendar events, contacts for personal contacts, and tasks for tasks or to-do items.
Each FirstClass user account can concurrently support up to four different SyncML devices/applications. FCSS automatically selects the first available (non-active) device slot in your account when a new SyncML device registers with FCSS. You can customize the configuration for each device you need to manage. You can specify:
• which contacts are sent to a particular device
• which date range of calendar events are sent to a particular device
• how the conflict resolution policy is enforced.
This means that you can, for example have:
• bi-directional synchronization of all contacts and calendar events to a Blackberry® as device 1
• a one-way download of personal contacts to a personal mobile phone as device 2
• device 3 designated as an Outlook® client, providing additional contacts or calendar events to FirstClass.
